YouTube expands thumbnail controls for Shorts and integrates AI generation
The platform’s latest update aligns short-form video features with long-form standards, introducing Ask Studio for AI-assisted design while noting future expansion plans.
YouTube has introduced a suite of new tools designed to streamline thumbnail creation for content creators, specifically targeting short-form videos known as Shorts. The update brings several features previously exclusive to long-form content to the Shorts ecosystem, aiming to provide creators with greater control over how their videos are presented.
Members of the YouTube Partner Program, who are eligible to earn revenue from their content, can now upload custom thumbnail images for Shorts. This capability allows creators to ensure their short-form videos feature visuals that align with their specific topics. The update also permits retroactive changes, enabling desktop users to add or modify thumbnails for existing Shorts via the Content tab in YouTube Studio.
For users accessing the platform via desktop, the update introduces the ability to select from three suggested frames taken directly from their videos. This functionality mirrors the options already available for long-form videos, addressing a disparity in feature sets between video formats. Mobile users retain the existing ability to pick any frame from their video to use as a thumbnail.
The platform’s internal artificial intelligence tool, Ask Studio, has also been updated to support thumbnail generation. Creators can utilise the tool to generate images for their latest videos and then apply text prompts to adjust the layout, colour, and other visual elements. YouTube states that the thumbnails created through this process will be tailored to the video’s specific themes and the creator’s style.
This expansion of AI-driven tools comes at a time when viewer sentiment regarding the increasing prevalence of AI-generated imagery on the platform has been mixed. While the new features offer enhanced creative control, the integration of AI into core presentation elements continues to be a point of discussion among users.
YouTube has indicated that the custom thumbnail capability for Shorts is currently restricted to Partner Program members but plans to expand access to a broader user base in the future. The specific timeline for this wider rollout has not yet been disclosed.
