Yankees secure third straight MLB playoff berth
New York will enter the postseason still chasing Tampa Bay in the American League East and a first World Series title since 2009.
The New York Yankees have secured a place in the MLB postseason for the third consecutive season after the Toronto Blue Jays lost, according to CBS Sports. The berth is New York’s ninth in the past 10 seasons.
The Yankees also recorded a winning season for the 34th consecutive year. Despite the club’s MLB-record 27 World Series titles, it has not won the championship since 2009.
New York remains four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, with a four-game series between the teams scheduled for 22–24 September, including a doubleheader.
CBS Sports identified Aaron Judge’s return, a potentially strong playoff rotation and what it described as a weaker American League field as factors that could improve the Yankees’ prospects. Judge returned from injury and homered on Monday, although he is being eased back into the lineup.
The Yankees lead MLB in team ERA and remain among baseball’s most prolific home-run teams. CBS Sports cited Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole and Max Fried as possible leading options for a shorter postseason rotation, while noting that the team’s World Series prospects remain uncertain.
