The New York Yankees have left Aaron Judge off their roster for the American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, keeping the captain out as he recovers from a right calf strain.

The Yankees announced the decision on Saturday ahead of Game 1. Judge has been on the injured list since 16 September and also missed New York’s two-game Wild Card Series sweep of the Boston Red Sox.

Manager Aaron Boone said Judge had been taking part in live hitting and running as he worked towards a possible return. The roster announcement does not establish when he might be available again.

Ryan Weathers replaced Amed Rosario as the only change to the Yankees’ roster from the Wild Card Series. Judge’s omission applies to the ALDS; his availability for a later round remains uncertain.
