Scholes questions whether Lammens is Manchester United’s long-term answer
The former United midfielder says the goalkeeper’s performances remain under assessment after seven goals conceded in four league matches.
Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens remains an unresolved question for the club, according to former player Paul Scholes.
Writing for Yahoo Sports, Scholes said “the jury’s still out” on whether Lammens can become a top-class long-term option, after the Belgian conceded seven goals in four league matches.
United have collected four points from those four matches and lost 0–1 to Manchester City in the derby. The results have added pressure to a team that has made a poor start to the campaign.
Scholes said elite goalkeepers had been central to recent Premier League title-winning sides, citing Alisson at Liverpool, David Raya at Arsenal, and former United keepers Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.
He did not call for Lammens to be dropped, instead suggesting manager Michael Carrick may need to be patient while assessing whether the goalkeeper can provide a lasting solution. Lammens reportedly replaced Andre Onana and has improved United’s goalkeeping department, despite concerns over the number of goals conceded.
United are scheduled to face Brighton and Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup.
