Xtracycle has introduced the Swoop ASM, a long-tail cargo e-bike priced at US$4,500 that distinguishes itself through the integration of an automatic transmission mode. The launch marks a significant step for the company, which originally specialised in cargo trailers for mountain bikes before expanding into dedicated cargo e-bikes. The Swoop ASM is positioned in the market between the Trek Fetch+ 2 and the Urban Arrow Family, offering a steel-frame alternative to the carbon fibre and aluminium constructions typical of its competitors.

The bike’s primary technological differentiator is its use of Shimano’s Cues Di2 electronic shifting system. This lower-end electronic drivetrain features an automatic mode that utilises sensor data, including cadence, torque, and speed, to determine optimal gear changes. The system also includes a “Free Shift” function, which allows riders to shift gears while coasting by using the mid-motor to move the chain without increasing speed. This capability enables the bike to downshift automatically as a rider slows to a stop, preparing for a smoother acceleration from a standstill.

Mechanically, the Swoop ASM employs a single chainring and a 10-speed rear cassette, with all components powered by a single removable battery. The mid-motor offers three levels of pedal assist but lacks a throttle, requiring riders to exert force on the pedals even at the highest assist setting. The drivetrain components are described as specifically hardened to handle the strain of automatic shifting, although long-term durability data remains to be seen.

The choice of a steel frame is notable in an industry dominated by lighter materials chosen for manufacturing simplicity. The steel construction weighs just under 31 kg and is designed to offer distinct ride characteristics, including improved vibration dissipation. The bike features a “mullet” wheel setup with a larger front tyre and a smaller rear tyre, alongside front suspension to cushion the ride. The rear rack is modular, supporting passenger seating, handgrips, and various cargo bag attachments, though the hardware makes the rear wheel difficult to access for maintenance or locking.

In terms of market positioning, the Swoop ASM competes on feature integration rather than sheer cargo capacity. While it lacks the large cargo tub of the Urban Arrow Family, its long-tail form factor provides a more bicycle-like riding experience. The electronic shifting system is integrated with the motor and battery, eliminating the need for the additional batteries often required by other electronic shifting systems. This integration aims to reduce rider anxiety regarding battery levels while maintaining a seamless user interface.

The automatic transmission feature presents a trade-off between convenience and mechanical smoothness. While the software is effective at identifying when a shift is required, the physical execution can be clunky if the rider does not ease off the pedals, potentially causing noise and component wear. Despite this, the system is designed to benefit less experienced cyclists who may not have developed the instinct to adjust pedalling force during gear changes. For the US$4,500 price point, the Swoop ASM offers a comprehensive package of electronic assistance and cargo utility for the modern urban commuter.
