Xiaomi’s new Redmi phone lasts for three days on a single charge

Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max, a device that prioritises endurance over raw processing power. The handset features a 9,210mAh dual-cell silicon-carbon battery, which is the largest capacity Xiaomi has fitted in a phone sold in Europe. In select other markets, the device is available with an even larger 10,000mAh single-cell battery. The high silicon content of the cell allows for greater energy density, enabling the company to pack substantial power into a compact form factor.

The engineering of the new device results in a phone that is 8g lighter and fractionally thinner than the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, despite the massive battery capacity. Xiaomi claims the battery provides up to three days of "worry-free use" or 37 hours of continuous video playback. To address concerns regarding the long-term longevity of silicon-carbon cells, the company states the battery should retain 80 percent of its capacity over 1,600 charging cycles, estimated at around six years of use.

Charging speed is a key differentiator for the Pro Max model. It supports 100W wired charging, which Xiaomi says reaches a full charge in just over an hour. Alternatively, a 20-minute charge is sufficient to provide a day’s worth of power. This rapid replenishment capability is designed to mitigate the inconvenience of carrying a device with such a large energy store.

While the battery specifications are premium, the rest of the hardware is positioned as a mid-range offering. The phone is equipped with a Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset, up to 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. It features a 6.83-inch OLED display protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and holds an IP69K rating for dust and water resistance. The camera system includes a 50-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 32-megapixel selfie camera.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is the top model in a series of four new Redmi Note 17 handsets. The range shares a focus on large batteries, with the base 4G model featuring a 7,700mAh battery and a 6.99-inch OLED screen. This strategy suggests Xiaomi is targeting consumers who prioritise screen size and battery life over high-end computational performance.

The device is available in Europe, Australia, Latin America, and other global markets at the local equivalent of $499. Notably, the US market is currently excluded from the launch. For Australian consumers, the entry into the market at this price point offers a direct alternative to premium flagships, particularly those seeking extended battery life without the higher price tag of top-tier competitors.
