Windows 11 laptop users may be able to reduce battery consumption by changing a range of power, display and background-process settings, according to guidance from Engadget.

The simplest adjustment is reducing screen brightness. Users can also open Settings > System > Power & battery to change Power mode, screen, sleep and hibernation timeouts, particularly when the laptop is running on battery.

Windows 11’s Energy Saver setting can limit background activity, reduce brightness and disable some visual effects. It can be activated manually or configured to switch on at a selected battery threshold. Engadget also recommends the Control Panel’s Power saver plan, with processor-state limits available for users willing to accept lower performance.

Turning off transparency, animation and other visual effects may further reduce power use. Closing unnecessary applications, browser tabs, background processes and startup programs can also help, while Chrome’s Memory Saver and Edge’s Sleeping Tabs can limit activity from unused tabs.

The benefits will vary with a laptop’s hardware, software, workload and existing settings. Engadget cautions that battery-saving measures can affect performance or functionality, and users should check Task Manager before disabling unfamiliar processes.
