Windows 11 users can create custom desktop notifications for scheduled times or specific system events using tools already included with the operating system, according to WIRED.

The guide identifies Task Scheduler as the most flexible option. Users can set reminders to run daily, weekly, monthly or once, or trigger them when the computer starts, when they log on or when a specific event is recorded.

WIRED’s method uses the built-in “msg” program. After creating a basic task, users enter “msg” as the program and add their reminder text as an argument. The resulting task can be reviewed, edited or deleted through the Task Scheduler Library.

Microsoft Clock provides a simpler alternative through named recurring alarms. Microsoft To Do can attach reminders to tasks, with options for dates, times, repeat schedules and categories.

Third-party clock, reminder and to-do applications such as TickTick offer similar functionality, often with additional features. WIRED notes that these tools may be more than users need when the goal is simply to generate a custom notification. Notification behaviour can vary depending on Windows versions, permissions, user accounts and session settings.
