West Virginia retires Pat White’s No. 5 jersey
The former quarterback becomes the seventh West Virginia football player to have his jersey number retired.
West Virginia University has retired former quarterback Pat White’s No. 5 jersey at a ceremony held before the Mountaineers’ season opener against Coastal Carolina on Saturday.
White went 35-8 as West Virginia’s starting quarterback and won four bowl games, including the Sugar Bowl after the 2005 season and the Fiesta Bowl after the 2007 season. ESPN reported that he is the only starting quarterback in NCAA history to achieve that mark.
The ceremony placed White’s playing legacy alongside his current role at the university. He is now an assistant quarterbacks coach and an assistant to head coach Rich Rodriguez, who recruited him in 2004 and gave him the opportunity to remain at quarterback.
White finished his career with more than 6,000 passing yards and 4,000 rushing yards. His 4,480 rushing yards rank third among Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks, according to ESPN.
He was inducted into West Virginia’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. The jersey retirement makes White the seventh West Virginia football player to have his number retired.
