West Jordan boys clinch inaugural 5A title by single point; Box Elder girls dominate
West Jordan’s boys’ team secured its first-ever 5A state track championship by defeating defending champions Viewmont by a margin of one point, while Box Elder’s girls’ team claimed the title with 83 points.

West Jordan’s boys’ track team captured its inaugural 5A state championship at the state meet held at Brigham Young University, defeating defending champions Viewmont by a razor-thin margin of one point. The Jaguars finished with 65 points to Viewmont’s 64, securing the title in the final event of the day. The victory marked a significant turnaround for a program that had finished two points short of a title two years ago and narrowly missed second place the previous year.
The championship race remained a tight contest between the two schools through 17 of 18 events, with Viewmont leading 58 to 55 heading into the final 4x400 relay. West Jordan won the relay while Viewmont finished second, overturning the deficit to claim the title. West Jordan coach Taylor Johnson noted that the team’s performance had improved significantly in the weeks leading up to the finals, with key individual contributions proving decisive.
Porter Creasy set an early tone for West Jordan by winning both the 100m and 200m events. Paula Havea secured a surprise victory in the shot put, while Ian McIntyre’s eighth-place finish in the javelin provided crucial points that helped secure the outright win. Johnson highlighted the team’s resilience, noting that the victory felt particularly rewarding after previous near-misses.
In the girls’ competition, Box Elder won the 5A title decisively with 83 points, marking their first championship since 2022. The Bees finished well ahead of the field, with Springville and Salem Hills tying for second place with 58 points. Box Elder coach Katie Smith attributed the success to the team’s cohesive culture, describing the group as a family that supports each other through challenges.
Several Box Elder athletes set new school records during the meet. Kaylan Anderson set a record in the 400m, Kassidee Kidd broke the 100m record, and Maya Lee set records in both the 800m and 3,200m. Meanwhile, Salem Hills’ Kambri Muir broke the state record in the girls’ 300m hurdles with a time of 42.57 seconds, overcoming a severe injury earlier in the season. Timpview’s Lily Alder won the girls’ 800m, 1,600m, and 3,200m events.
