Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart praised for safety-conscious play in practice
Head coach John Harbaugh and teammates commended Jaxson Dart’s adherence to risk-reduction protocols during Monday’s session, marking a shift from last season’s injury concerns.
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart drew applause from the team’s defence and head coach John Harbaugh during a practice session on Monday, following a play that highlighted a new emphasis on personal safety and risk reduction.
Dart executed a slide before being tackled on a third-and-five play, a decision that resonated with the coaching staff who have previously expressed concern over his tendency to remain in the pocket and take unnecessary hits. The incident occurred during what Harbaugh described as a critical situation drill, designed to simulate high-pressure scenarios in the fourth quarter where offensive execution can determine the outcome of a game.
"I did. I clapped," Harbaugh said when asked if he was among those who cheered the play. "I applauded when he did that. It was great. Critical situation drill. We were trying to get a third or fourth down... He came open. He ran around the corner, got the first down, slid inbounds, kept the clock running. All those things were well done."
The coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan, has been actively working to modify Dart’s playing style. Last season, Dart failed to slide on several occasions, resulting in him spending time in the medical tent and missing two games due to a concussion. The staff has stressed the importance of taking better care of his body and avoiding unnecessary contact.
All-Pro linebacker Brian Burns also commended Dart’s improved attention to detail. "Not really a surprise to see that he has that much attention to detail, and he's very intentional about his work," Burns said. "Him really focusing on staying in the pocket, going through his progressions, making the right decision, making smart reads. We obviously know he can create... But him being able to steer the defense the wrong way just going through his progressions, is very impressive."
Harbaugh noted that Dart has shown increased maturity in his second season with the Giants, particularly in his comfort level operating various offensive elements and motions. The team’s focus remains on ensuring Dart can sustain his performance throughout the upcoming season by minimising physical risks.
