West Bank crackdown intensifies as settler violence and home demolitions escalate
Hundreds detained across the occupied territories as settlers target mosques and paramedics, while political tensions rise ahead of Israeli elections.
The Israeli military has launched a wide-scale operation across the occupied West Bank, storming towns and detaining hundreds of Palestinians in a response to a shootout in Tal near Nablus that killed four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers. Ordered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the intensified security presence has seen settlers become more aggressive, with verified reports of arson attempts on mosques in Qusra and Kour, and assaults on Palestinians and paramedics in locations including Rafidia, Huwara, and Masafer Yatta.
Israeli forces have imposed strict traffic restrictions and established numerous security checkpoints on main roads and village entrances throughout the region. In Tal, the site of the initial confrontation, authorities are preparing to seal and demolish homes suspected of involvement in the violence. Lieutenant Colonel Ella Waweya, an Israeli army spokesperson, confirmed that houses were raided in preparation for temporary sealing, a preliminary step preceding demolition under existing policies that rights groups condemn as collective punishment.
The escalation has coincided with heightened settler activity, including attempts to set fire to the newly built Al-Rahma Mosque in Qusra and another place of worship in Kour. While worshippers in Kour reportedly extinguished the fire before it spread, video evidence verified by Al Jazeera showed flames consuming parts of the Qusra mosque, where settlers also spray-painted slogans on the walls. Additional incidents involved assaults on Palestine Red Crescent Society paramedics in Masafer Yatta and other areas, drawing condemnation from local officials and international observers.
Political tensions are further exacerbated by the upcoming Israeli general elections, with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announcing plans for 763 new settlement units in the Eli settlement south of Nablus. This expansion aligns with strategies aimed at consolidating support among the right-wing base, even as opinion polls suggest potential challenges for the current government. The violence occurs against a backdrop of ongoing conflict since October 2023, during which thousands of Palestinians have been detained, many held without charge.
Protests against the military crackdown and settler violence drew hundreds to Tel Aviv on Saturday, resulting in nine arrests by Israeli police. Authorities cited unauthorised demonstration and disruption of public order as the reasons for detaining participants. As the operation continues, the combination of military enforcement, settlement expansion, and political maneuvering underscores the complex and volatile nature of the situation in the occupied territories.
