Wendy’s cuts or limits breakfast at about 120 restaurants
The changes followed franchisee Meritage Hospitality Group’s Chapter 11 filing, as Wendy’s reviews breakfast amid weaker sales and restaurant closures.
Wendy’s has stopped serving breakfast or reduced breakfast hours at about 120 restaurants operated by franchisee Meritage Hospitality Group, according to reporting published by TheStreet and carried by Yahoo Finance.
Meritage filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 17 September 2026. The franchisee operated 314 Wendy’s restaurants and reportedly closed 60 underperforming stores as part of its restructuring.
Wendy’s said most of its restaurants continue to serve breakfast. The company has allowed franchisees to opt out of breakfast, but has not committed to making the changes permanent across the system.
Breakfast accounted for 5.5% of Wendy’s overall sales in the reported second quarter, down from 8% in the second quarter of 2020. Wendy’s launched breakfast nationally in May 2020.
The company reported a 7% decline in US same-restaurant sales and 289 US restaurant closures in the first half of the year. The wider role and duration of breakfast reductions remain under review.
