Wembanyama Set to Enter Sneaker Free Agency Amid Record-Breaking Market Shifts
With Steph Curry’s $400 million deal with Chinese manufacturer Li-Ning setting a new financial benchmark, Victor Wembanyama is poised to negotiate a major footwear contract after his current Nike agreement expires.

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama is preparing to enter the sneaker endorsement market as a free agent in October, following the expiration of his multi-year deal with Nike. The timing coincides with a significant shift in athlete sponsorship valuations, highlighted by Stephen Curry’s recent agreement with Chinese sportswear manufacturer Li-Ning, valued at more than $400 million.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, speaking on the Cousins podcast with Tracy McGrady, Wembanyama’s contract status places him in a unique position within the current NBA landscape. While peers such as Kevin Durant and LeBron James remain with Nike, and Curry has moved to Li-Ning, Wembanyama is the only prominent young star without a signature shoe line or a new long-term footwear agreement.
The 22-year-old French international is currently playing in the NBA Finals, having recently secured the Western Conference Finals MVP award and the NBA Defensive Player of the Year honour. Charania noted that Wembanyama was the first unanimous winner in history for the defensive award, adding to his profile as he approaches the free agency window.
Wembanyama’s current relationship with Nike began while he was playing for Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 in France. The deal was extended into his NBA career ahead of the 2023 NBA Draft, where he was selected as the number one overall pick. He currently features in Nike’s GT performance series and had his “Alien” logo revealed by the brand in April 2024, but he does not yet have a personal signature shoe.
The broader endorsement market for young NBA stars is already largely settled, with Anthony Edwards at Adidas, Luka Doncic and Jayson Tatum at Jordan Brand, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at Converse all holding major deals. Wembanyama, who is also confirmed as the cover athlete for the upcoming NBA 2K27 video game, remains the standout figure without a committed long-term partner in this sector.
As the October deadline approaches, the market will watch closely to see if Wembanyama can secure a deal comparable to the benchmarks set by Curry. His combination of on-court accolades, global profile, and youth makes him a central figure in the next phase of athletic sponsorship negotiations.
