Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has publicly criticised the home fanbase, describing the booing he received during a 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills as "disrespectful" and "personal." The comments, made during a postgame press conference, suggest that the tension between the star player and the club's supporters is deepening, with Watson arguing that the negative reception is not solely tied to his statistical output in the match.

Watson, who completed five of 12 passes for 36 yards and an interception, stated that the hostility felt "a little bit more personal" than a reaction to his performance. He noted that he believes he receives better support from opposing fans than from those in Cleveland, highlighting a disconnect that has persisted throughout his tenure with the franchise.

To illustrate his point, Watson referenced a previous game at the same venue where he tore his Achilles tendon. He observed that the same fanbase had cheered when he was injured, questioning the logic of their current reaction to his play. "What does that have to do with anything about performance?" Watson asked, suggesting that the crowd's behaviour was inconsistent with their response to his physical setbacks.

The quarterback expressed disappointment that his two years away from the league, along with his charity work in the city and efforts to return to form, had not improved the fans' perception of him. He acknowledged that while he had hoped his character and community involvement would help, the reaction indicated otherwise, leaving him to continue working on his mental approach moving forward.

The incident occurs amid an ongoing position battle with Shedeur Sanders, who outperformed Watson in the same game, going nine of 11 for 74 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Sanders responded to the fan treatment by calling for mutual respect, stating that "we're all human" and expressing a desire for players and fans to treat one another with consideration, though he admitted he did not "really appreciate" the lack of it.

Watson’s tenure in Cleveland has been marked by significant investment and mixed results. The Browns acquired him in a high-profile trade involving three consecutive first-round picks and a record-setting five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract.
