Wakefield end Wigan streak to reach first Super League Grand Final
A 33-6 semi-final win sets up a Grand Final meeting with Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford.
Wakefield Trinity have reached their first Super League Grand Final after beating Wigan Warriors 33-6, ending Wigan’s 16-match winning streak. They will face Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday, 3 October.
Wigan opened the scoring through Brad O’Neill after a tense first 15 minutes, but Wakefield took control in the second half. Adam Keighran was sin-binned for a tip-tackle after 45 minutes, and Wakefield scored three tries while he was off the field.
Sky Sports reported that Tom Johnston, Jack Sinfield and Corey Hall scored during that spell. Ky Rodwell added another try to complete the 27-point win.
Wigan coach Matt Peet said his side were outplayed and credited Wakefield and coach Daryl Powell. Powell was appointed Wakefield head coach in October 2023, after leaving Castleford at the end of the 2021 season.
The result secures Wakefield’s first Grand Final appearance. Owner Matt Ellis linked the achievement to the club’s relegation three years earlier.
