Vučić resigns as Serbia’s president ahead of October vote

Aleksandar Vučić resigned as Serbia’s president on 27 September, ahead of a parliamentary election scheduled for 25 October. France 24 International reported that he intends to pursue the prime minister’s post as the Serbian Progressive Party’s candidate if it wins.
Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić is to serve as interim president until a successor is elected. The presidential election must be completed within 90 days, though no polling date has been confirmed.

The snap parliamentary election followed student-led protests that began after a canopy collapsed at Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, killing 16 people.
