Olympic Ski Racer Lindsey Vonn Delivers Speech At USC Commencement
Former alpine ski racer discusses recovery and future plans at commencement ceremony

Olympic alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn delivered a commencement address at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism on Friday, urging over 1,200 graduates to view failure as an integral part of the path to success. The 41-year-old athlete used her platform to discuss her recent return to competition at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, where she competed despite sustaining significant injuries.

Vonn detailed her historic comeback attempt, noting that she suffered a torn ACL just one week before the opening ceremony. She proceeded to compete in the women’s downhill race on 8 February, but crashed 13 seconds into the event, fracturing her tibia in her left leg. Despite the outcome not aligning with her expectations, Vonn stated she remained proud of her ability to compete regardless of the obstacles she faced.

In her speech, Vonn encouraged the students to persist through adversity and not be afraid to attempt difficult tasks even when the results are uncertain. She advised the graduates to “step into your own gate” and to dare to dream, emphasising that the only true failure in life is the refusal to try. She told the audience she was not there to discuss how to win, but rather how to keep going after falling.

The skier acknowledged that she faces a long road to recovery from the combined ACL tear and tibia fracture. However, she indicated that she has not ruled out a return to professional skiing. Vonn stated she remains open to competing again, with the earliest possible return being the 2027-28 ski season.

The address was reported by LA Sports Report and originally sourced via Yahoo Sports. Vonn, who has endured a long history of knee injuries throughout her career, used the occasion to share her perspective on resilience with the incoming class of communicators and journalists.
