Volvo previews longer-range XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids
The 2028 SUVs are expected to more than double their electric range while adding safety and in-car technology upgrades.
Volvo has previewed upgraded 2028 versions of its XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid SUVs, with preliminary range estimates that more than double the electric driving capability of the previous models.
The XC60 is expected to deliver 78 miles of electric range and 590 miles overall, while the larger XC90 is expected to offer 73 miles on electric power and 560 miles in total. Engadget reported the figures, which remain subject to change before release.
Both SUVs use a 41.2kWh battery, with 37.9kWh usable, alongside a 455-horsepower all-wheel-drive powertrain. The XC60’s previous plug-in hybrid version offered about 35 miles of electric range. Volvo will continue to offer mild-hybrid B5 and B6 variants.
The XC60 gains an additional radar sensor, upgraded 360-degree cameras, a newer processor and lane-change assistance. Both models retain an 11.2-inch Google-powered display with Gemini integration. The XC60 also receives revised exterior styling and adaptive LED headlights.
The XC60 T8 is expected to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds, compared with 4.9 seconds for the XC90 T8. Dealers are expected to receive the updated SUVs in early 2027, although timing remains conditional.
Volvo has not announced pricing. The current 2026 XC60 T8 starts at $62,545, while the XC90 T8 starts at $77,595.
