Volvo expands electric range of 2028 XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids
Larger batteries lift the XC60’s EPA-estimated electric range to 78 miles, while both SUVs gain Google Gemini voice assistance.
Volvo has refreshed its 2028 XC60 and XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid SUVs with larger batteries, extending their claimed electric-only ranges as the automaker adds new software and production capacity.
Both models now use a 37.9 kWh usable battery, or 41.2 kWh gross. Volvo says the XC60 has an electric range of 78 miles (125 km) under the US Environmental Protection Agency test cycle, while the XC90 is rated at 73 miles (117 km).
The change marks a significant increase for the XC60, whose electric range rose from 17 miles (27 km) in 2018 to 35 miles (56 km) after its first refresh. Volvo says the updated model could travel 590 miles (949 km) with a full battery and fuel tank, although that is a capability estimate rather than a guaranteed real-world distance.
The XC60 receives revised headlights with matrix LED projectors, a slimmer grille, updated bumpers and changes to other exterior panels. A ventilated leather interior option has also been added. Volvo plans to build the model in South Carolina as well as Sweden.
Both SUVs gain an 11.2-inch infotainment system with Google Gemini voice assistance. Volvo’s best-selling model, the XC60 had sold more than 2.7 million units worldwide by the end of last year, according to the supplied report from Ars Technica.
