Spanberger, the first woman elected to the governorship in Virginia, described herself as a rising star among Democratic Party moderates and emphasised practical governance over ideological confrontation.
The interview, conducted by François Picard on 23 July 2026, addressed the broader strategy of the Democratic Party following Spanberger’s election in November 2025. She noted that her victory occurred on the same night as Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, became mayor of New York City, highlighting the diverse political landscape within the party. Spanberger argued that electoral success requires direct engagement with voters, including door-to-door outreach to understand their priorities.
Discussions turned to international security and election integrity when Spanberger addressed concerns regarding potential foreign interference in European regional elections.
