Villa pivot on Martinez as Suzuki deal nears £30m completion
The potential arrival of Japan international Zion Suzuki has reignited speculation surrounding the 33-year-old’s position at the club, despite his recent Europa League triumph.
Aston Villa are reportedly in the final stages of securing the services of Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, with the deal valued at approximately £30m. The 23-year-old Japan international has been identified as a primary target for the club, marking a significant shift in the squad’s composition ahead of the new Premier League season.
The progression of Suzuki’s transfer has cast doubt on the future of current first-choice goalkeeper Emi Martinez. The Argentina international, who recently won the Europa League with Villa to end the club’s 30-year trophy drought, has been linked with a move to Juventus. This potential departure contrasts sharply with previous statements from director of football operations Damian Vidagany, who had previously confirmed Martinez would remain at Villa Park.
Suzuki, who was born in America but qualifies for Japan through his mother, has made 59 appearances for Parma since joining from Urawa Red Diamonds in 2024. He has earned 28 caps for his national side since his debut in 2022 and featured in all four of Japan’s matches at the recent World Cup. His experience and age profile present a long-term alternative to the veteran Martinez.
Martinez’s situation has been complicated by his absence from recent fixtures. Manager Unai Emery granted Martinez, along with Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins, a month’s leave following the World Cup. Consequently, Martinez missed the recent Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and was scheduled to return to full training ahead of the Premier League opener against Brighton.
Martinez joined Villa from Arsenal for £17m in 2020 and has made 256 appearances for the club. His status as a World Cup winner in 2022 and recent runner-up to Spain adds weight to the interest from Italian side Juventus. However, with Suzuki’s arrival seemingly imminent, the architectural plan for Villa’s goalkeeping position appears to be undergoing a fundamental restructuring.
