Messi named in Argentina squad for reported farewell against Benin
Argentina is scheduled to play Benin at Buenos Aires’ Estadio Monumental on 6 October, following Lionel Messi’s reported retirement from international football.
Lionel Messi has been called up by Argentina for a scheduled farewell match against Benin in Buenos Aires on 6 October, according to Yahoo Sports.
The fixture is part of an extended FIFA international window. Argentina is also scheduled to face Bolivia in Córdoba on 30 September and Burkina Faso in Buenos Aires on 3 October, before meeting Benin at the Estadio Monumental.
The reported call-up follows Messi’s announcement on 31 August that he was retiring from Argentina national-team duties. The available report says he will take part in the Benin match, although it does not include an official confirmation from the Argentine Football Association.
Messi has scored 125 goals in 207 appearances for Argentina and helped the team win the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 World Cup. He has played for Inter Miami since 2023.
