Vikings appoint Murray as starting quarterback ahead of Packers clash

The Minnesota Vikings have officially named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, selecting him over J.J. McCarthy ahead of the regular season opener on 13 September against the Green Bay Packers. The decision concludes a quarterback competition that began when Murray signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract on 12 March following his release from the Arizona Cardinals.

Murray will now begin full-time practice with the starting offense, having previously split reps with McCarthy during the spring and the first two weeks of training camp. The timing provides Murray with a month of dedicated preparation before the season begins, despite a recent full-pads stadium practice on Sunday night where he threw two interceptions. McCarthy was unable to capitalise on the errors to reclaim the position.

The move marks the fourth different Week 1 starting quarterback for the Vikings over the last four years. Murray, a former No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft, brings a history of inconsistency, having missed 30 of 68 games over the past five seasons due to injuries. His last winning season came in 2021, and he posted a 38-48-1 record during his seven-year tenure with the Cardinals before they made a clean break after hiring new coach Mike LaFleur.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell cited McCarthy’s struggles with injuries, accuracy, and decision-making during his first season as the starter as reasons for seeking competition. McCarthy, the No. 10 pick of the 2024 draft, lost his entire rookie season to a torn meniscus in his right knee. While he showed incremental progress this summer, he could not close the gap with Murray, who demonstrated comfort taking snaps from under centre and a strong understanding of the team’s downfield passing offence.

The Vikings’ general manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, was fired in part due to the team’s failure to settle the quarterback position. The coaching staff has previously helped Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold achieve career-changing seasons, leading to significant contracts for both players. Murray’s contract includes a clause prohibiting the Vikings from using the franchise tag to retain him in 2027, giving him a clear path to the free agent market if he performs well. Quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer remain on the roster.
