Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen has been formally charged with two misdemeanours following his 30 August arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to reporting from Yahoo Sports, citing the Indianapolis Star, Allen faces a Class A misdemeanour charge for operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.15 or more. He was also charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanour.

Allen was arrested in downtown Indianapolis after his car was stopped in a no-parking area. Court documents reportedly described slurred speech, glossy eyes, an odour of alcohol and poor performance on field sobriety tests. His recorded blood alcohol concentration was .224.

He was booked into Marion County Jail and released later the same day. The charges are allegations and do not establish guilt.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard has said any team discipline would be handled internally. No potential team or NFL discipline has been confirmed.

Allen signed a one-year contract with Indianapolis on 19 August, reportedly worth up to US$8.32 million.
