Viera volleyball secures early-season district sweep over Melbourne
The Hawks improved to a 2-0 record with a balanced offensive display, as 10 different players contributed to a straight-set victory.
Viera volleyball has begun the season with a decisive statement, sweeping Melbourne 25-15, 25-19, and 25-17 in an early-season district meeting on 20 August. The victory marks the second game of the season for both squads and extends Viera’s winning streak to a 2-0 record. The Hawks had previously upset top-seeded Melbourne in the district semifinals the previous year, but this contest served as a test of their current form and tactical discipline.
Head coach Sarah Wayne attributed the victory to the team’s ability to control their side of the court and eliminate errors. Wayne noted that the squad had focused on defensive play and offensive execution, particularly from the outside hitters. She highlighted that both middle blockers committed zero errors during the match, a factor she credited for the team’s ability to maintain pressure throughout all three sets.
The offensive output was notably distributed, with 10 different Viera players recording points. The team finished the match with 28 kills, 10 aces, and seven blocks that led to points. Wayne explained that the versatility of the setters, who were comfortable setting any of the three hitters, forced Melbourne to guess, creating openings for Viera’s attackers. This balanced approach allowed the Hawks to build significant leads in the middle portions of each set.
Junior Addi Casey led the team with 14 kills, finishing one kill shy of her career high from the previous season. Casey, who received her first varsity playing time last year, recorded 162 kills in 80 sets for the second-most on the team. She described the match as a moment of strong team connection, noting that the energy and setter-hitter connection were flowing effectively. Casey also cited her summer work on out-of-system balls and mental preparation as key factors in her performance.
Other contributors included freshman Samantha Wasdin, who posted five kills, and junior Brighton O’Brien, who recorded four kills and two blocks that led to points. Junior Emery Hart and senior Shaylee Wreggit each tallied three kills. The match saw Viera establish dominant runs, including a 15-1 surge in the first set and a 7-point streak in the third set that secured the victory.
Wayne stated that the district win would instil further confidence in the group as they look ahead to October. She emphasised that the team aims to be a different squad than the previous year, citing the improved confidence and connection displayed in this early-season performance.
