US Senate blocks proposed West Bank accountability report
A 47–53 vote defeated a resolution that would have required the Trump administration to report on nine Americans’ deaths and detention conditions affecting Palestinians.
The US Senate voted 47–53 on Tuesday to block a resolution requiring the Trump administration to report on deaths of nine Americans in the occupied West Bank and Israel’s treatment of Palestinian children in military detention.
Introduced by Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen under the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, the measure sought an unclassified report within 30 days. It would have covered investigations into the deaths, treatment of US citizens held in Israeli prisons, and conditions for Palestinian children in Israeli military detention.
The vote was largely along party lines. John Fetterman was the only Democrat to oppose advancing the resolution, while Republican Rand Paul was the only Republican to support it.
The resolution cited nine American deaths in the West Bank since January 2022, including Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, killed in May 2022. It also referred to Palestinian-American children detained by Israeli forces and claims about detention conditions.
The measure cited reports by rights groups of deaths and abuse in Israeli military camps, and argued that the deaths of Americans had not been met with accountability. The Senate vote blocked the proposed reporting requirement; it did not determine the underlying allegations.
