Trump’s AI summit leaves oversight questions open

US President Donald Trump convened technology executives at the White House to discuss artificial intelligence oversight, with the meeting producing a voluntary company safety agreement and an executive order changing terminology used by federal agencies.
The agreement says companies will maintain safeguards, detect and correct problems quickly, and work with independent auditors to assess whether their systems operate as intended. Trump called the document “morally binding”, but it sets out no consequences for breaches.
Trump said he would establish a board to oversee AI safety, without specifying its membership or powers. University of Sydney law professor Kimberlee Weatherall criticised the pact as “deeply unimpressive”, saying it leaves firms to define safety and does not state what happens if they breach it. Jeannie Paterson of the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Ethics said self-regulation could result in minimal safeguards.
The order directs executive branch agencies to use “SI” and “Super Intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence” in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents and other non-statutory material.
Trump also reiterated support for data centre expansion, despite local concerns about electricity use and community impacts.
