US to let DR Congo football team in for World Cup despite Ebola restrictions
Department of State confirms strict screening protocols for squad ahead of World Cup fixture

The United States has agreed to permit the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s national football team to enter the country for the World Cup, granting a targeted exemption to an ongoing Ebola-related entry ban. The restriction currently prohibits non-Americans who have visited the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan within the previous 21 days from entering the United States due to a deadly outbreak of the virus.

A senior Department of State official confirmed the decision, stating that the team would be subject to rigorous screening and isolation protocols comparable to those mandated for returning US citizens and permanent residents. The official noted on condition of anonymity that authorities are working to implement the same testing and isolation procedures for the squad as those applied to American nationals returning from affected zones.

The exemption applies exclusively to the team members. The Department of State clarified that the waiver does not extend to general fans or other non-essential travellers from the DRC who may wish to attend the matches. This distinction ensures that the sporting event proceeds while maintaining the integrity of the public health measures designed to curb the spread of the virus.

There is some ambiguity regarding the team’s recent movements, as the official indicated the squad had already been training in Europe. This prior location might mean they were not technically subject to the ban, given they had not recently visited the affected regions. However, the government has prepared for the contingency that they may have been in the DRC within the last 21 days, necessitating the strict protocols now in place.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the only national squad from the three affected countries to have qualified for the tournament. Their World Cup campaign is scheduled to begin in Texas against Portugal on 17 June, marking the first confirmed instance of a sports team receiving such a high-level exemption from the current health-related entry restrictions.
