Diplomatic talks resume as Bangladesh and India seek to salvage cricket series

Bangladesh and India have initiated ministerial-level discussions to salvage a six-match white-ball cricket series scheduled for next month, marking a potential thaw in diplomatic relations strained by recent political turmoil. The tour, comprising three one-day internationals and three T20 matches, was originally planned for August 2025 but was postponed as bilateral ties deteriorated.

Bangladesh Sports Minister Aminul Haque confirmed that the issue is being addressed at the highest diplomatic levels, with talks ongoing between the foreign ministers of both nations. Haque stated that officials are working to resolve the deadlock that previously disrupted cricketing engagements, expressing hope that a resolution would be reached shortly.

The suspension of the series follows the 2024 mass uprising in Bangladesh that toppled then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina fled to India, a longtime ally, where reports indicate she remains in hiding. The political shift has significantly altered the diplomatic landscape between Dhaka and New Delhi, leading to the initial cancellation of the scheduled tour.

Tensions were further exacerbated in February when Bangladesh refused to send a team to India for the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns. The International Cricket Council rejected Bangladesh’s request to relocate the matches to Sri Lanka, resulting in Scotland being drafted in to replace them. The incident highlighted the extent of the diplomatic rift and its impact on international sporting commitments.

India last toured Bangladesh in September and October 2024, sweeping both Test and T20 formats. Prior to that, in 2022, India won the Test series 2-0 while Bangladesh secured the ODI series 2-1. The current negotiations aim to restore the sporting calendar and address the underlying diplomatic issues that have complicated bilateral relations since the change in government.
