US and Iran tensions persist as Washington confirms release of detained citizen

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that Iranian authorities have released American citizen Dena Karari, who had been detained since December 2024. In a statement posted to his Truth Social platform, Trump described the release as a "gesture of goodwill" from Tehran and confirmed that Karari was now safely outside Iran and in good condition.
The announcement comes at a time of heightened military friction between Washington and Tehran. Trump recently ordered a resumption of strikes against Iran and reimposed a naval blockade on its ports, marking a significant escalation in hostilities despite a memorandum of understanding signed last month aimed at ending the Middle East war. Fighting has since resumed across the region, complicating diplomatic efforts.
Karari’s lawyer, Jared Genser, confirmed the release late on Wednesday, stating that his client was on her way back to the United States. Genser described the charges against Karari—espionage and collaboration with a hostile state—as "bogus," noting that her involvement stemmed from her operation of the Children of Mehr Foundation, a non-profit organisation that assisted impoverished children in Iran through private donations.
According to Genser, Karari was subjected to a coercive exit ban and interrogated dozens of times by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security. He reported that although she was never physically detained, she endured significant physical and psychological hardship during her ordeal. Genser used the opportunity to call on Iran to release all remaining "wrongly imprisoned Americans" and Iranian political prisoners.
Iran has been widely accused of using Western nationals as bargaining chips in broader geopolitical negotiations. This development follows a similar event in May, when Washington announced the release of an Iranian citizen with US permanent residence status after he served a 10-year prison sentence. The current release occurs against a backdrop of renewed strategic hostility, with both nations maintaining a posture of confrontation despite previous diplomatic overtures.
