United’s financial shift fuels Diomande pursuit despite PSG lead
Midfield rebuild frees up capital, but €120m asking price remains a significant hurdle for the Red Devils.

Manchester United have been granted renewed optimism in their pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, despite Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) being widely considered the frontrunners for the 19-year-old. Reports from Germany indicate that Diomande has given his approval to multiple clubs, including United, Manchester City, PSG, and Liverpool, complicating a transfer race that had previously appeared settled in favour of the French giants.
The Ivory Coast international has emerged as one of the most sought-after prospects on the market following a prolific debut Bundesliga season. Since joining Leipzig from Leganés last year by triggering a €20 million release clause, Diomande has recorded 13 goals and 10 assists in all competitions. His performance on the international stage, particularly during the World Cup where he troubled Ecuador’s defence, has further elevated his profile among Europe’s elite institutions.
While Liverpool were initially understood to be leading the charge as potential replacements for Mohamed Salah, Diomande has reportedly indicated a preference for PSG. The winger is said to value the Ligue 1 club’s Champions League pedigree and the platform it offers for Ballon d’Or contention, similar to the trajectory of Ousmane Dembélé under Luis Enrique. Club-to-club negotiations between Leipzig and PSG have been ongoing, with the German club demanding at least €120 million (£102m) to part with their asset.
However, United’s financial position may have shifted following a major midfield rebuild. The club recently completed the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £85 million, a move that was previously cited as a reason for their limited flexibility in the winger market. This restructuring has potentially freed up capital, allowing United to compete in a race where suitors are reportedly unwilling to exceed €100 million (£87m), a figure below Leipzig’s asking price.
Manchester United are prioritising a new left-winger to add balance to Michael Carrick’s forward line, with the prospect of pairing Diomande on the opposite flank to Amad viewed as a significant tactical upgrade. Although the club previously considered West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville as an alternative after PSG and Liverpool pulled ahead, the latest reports suggest United are back in contention, provided they can bridge the gap between their budget and Leipzig’s valuation.
