Ukraine defence minister resigns as part of Zelensky's cabinet reshuffle
Mykhailo Fedorov steps down after overseeing drone expansion and military reforms

Ukraine’s Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has announced his resignation, marking a significant shift in Kyiv’s leadership as part of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s broader cabinet reshuffle. The departure follows the parliamentary approval on Tuesday of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko’s exit from office, concluding a year-long tenure for the government head.

Fedorov, who assumed the role in January 2022 at the age of 35, became the youngest defence minister in Ukraine’s history. In a statement posted to Telegram, he described his service as a great honour and highlighted the ministry’s achievements during Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in February of that year.

During his tenure, Fedorov oversaw a rapid expansion of drone warfare capabilities and initiated sweeping military reforms. He was an early advocate for the integration of unmanned systems into frontline operations, a strategy that has since become a defining feature of the conflict.

A key diplomatic and logistical achievement attributed to his leadership was securing a deal with Elon Musk to provide Starlink satellite connectivity to Ukrainian troops. The agreement also included measures to restrict Russian forces from accessing the satellite network, a critical component for maintaining communications during the war.

Ukrainian media reports suggest that Interior Minister Igor Klymenko may succeed Fedorov in the defence portfolio. However, no official appointment has been confirmed, and the position remains vacant pending further announcements from the presidential administration.
