Ukraine drone offensive hits Tatarstan energy hub as civilian toll rises
A strike on the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk has killed at least 12 people, marking one of the deadliest single incidents in the conflict as both sides escalate long-range attacks on energy infrastructure and residential areas.
Russia reported on Monday that it had intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones during overnight attacks targeting approximately 15 regions, including the central Russian territory of Tatarstan and the annexed peninsula of Crimea. The strikes, which targeted both industrial and civilian sites, have resulted in a significant spike in casualties, with local authorities confirming at least 12 deaths and 39 injuries in the city of Nizhnekamsk.
The attack on Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, represents one of Kyiv’s most lethal single operations in the conflict, which has now exceeded four years. The region is a key hub for energy resources and hosts major oil refineries that Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted in retaliatory strikes to disrupt Moscow’s fuel supplies. Unverified social media footage captured large plumes of black smoke rising from an oil facility near the industrial city following the incident.
While the Russian defence ministry stated it shot down 456 drones, it did not specify how many successfully reached their intended targets. This lack of transparency is typical of Moscow’s reporting on such incidents. Earlier in the day, the Tatarstan regional press service had described the event as a "massive" drone attack, with officials confirming the casualty figures in a statement issued on Monday.
Concurrently, the conflict has seen a marked escalation in cross-border strikes from both sides, leading to a rise in civilian deaths according to the United Nations. In the Kharkiv region, a Russian artillery strike on the village of Bugaivka killed five people and destroyed residential housing. The regional prosecutor’s office posted images of the rubble on Telegram, describing the event as a massive strike on a residential area.
Casualties were also reported in other border zones. A woman was killed in a Ukrainian attack on the Russian border region of Belgorod, while a man died in a Russian drone strike on a taxi in the frontline Kherson region. Additionally, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia fired 126 drones during its overnight offensive. These events follow early Saturday strikes by Russian forces on Kyiv and surrounding regions, which killed at least four people, including a child, as Moscow reportedly exploits Ukraine’s depleted air defences to increase the frequency of attacks.
