The event features two championship bouts, headlined by Islam Makhachev defending his welterweight title against Ian Garry. Makhachev, a two-division champion, enters the bout with the objective of breaking the record for the longest undefeated streak in UFC history, a mark currently shared with Anderson Silva. His coach, Javier Mendez, indicated that a spectacular victory could elevate Makhachev into the conversation regarding the greatest fighters in the sport’s history. Makhachev previously broke the lightweight title defence record and secured a second weight class title last year.
Garry, holding a 17-1 record, approaches the fight with a strategy focused on distance management to neutralise Makhachev’s wrestling. Training alongside former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, Garry has stated that his primary tactical goal is to prevent Makhachev from securing a grappling position. Betting markets, as reported by DraftKings Sportsbook as of 15 August, currently favour Makhachev, though analysts have identified value in underdog propositions.
Dern’s bout marks her first title defence. The event also highlights a broader context within the sport, noting that it has been nearly a decade since a Canadian fighter held a UFC championship, following the tenures of Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Newton.
