UEFA Super Cup: PSG and Aston Villa to contest title in Salzburg
Paris Saint-Germain take on Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday, with Somali referee Omar Artan appointed to officiate the decisive encounter.

Paris Saint-Germain will face Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria. The match, which serves as the annual curtain-raiser to the European season, pits the reigning Champions League winners against the Europa League champions. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
PSG secured their Champions League title in May by defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. The victory, confirmed after Arsenal defender Gabriel missed a spot kick, makes PSG the first club to retain the trophy since Real Madrid’s three-year reign from 2016 to 2018.
Aston Villa ended a 30-year trophy drought by defeating Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final in Istanbul. Goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia in the first half, followed by a second-half strike from Morgan Rogers, secured the club’s first major European prize in 44 years.
The two clubs previously met during the 2024-25 Champions League quarterfinals. PSG won the first leg 3-1 in Paris and lost the second leg 3-2 in Birmingham, advancing 5-4 on aggregate. Betting markets from Polymarket currently list PSG as favourites, with a 55 per cent probability of winning in regulation time, compared to a 25 per cent chance of a draw and a 22 per cent chance of an Aston Villa victory.
Somali referee Omar Artan has been appointed to officiate the Super Cup. Under UEFA regulations, if the scores are level after the 90 minutes of regulation time, the match will proceed directly to a penalty shootout without the addition of extra time.
The fixture has a history dating back to 1973, with Real Madrid holding the record for most wins with six titles. PSG are the reigning Super Cup holders after beating Tottenham 4-3 on penalties in last season’s tie. The match will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom on TNT Sports and in the United States on CBC Sports.
