Tuchel will not let Tampa pitch affect selection
England head coach outlines squad management strategy ahead of World Cup opener

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has ruled out the condition of the temporary grass pitch at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium as a factor in his team selection for the upcoming friendly against New Zealand. The match, scheduled for Saturday evening, forms part of England’s pre-World Cup camp in West Palm Beach, Florida, with the squad set to face Costa Rica in a second warm-up on 10 June before the tournament begins on 11 June.

Reports from The Daily Mail indicated that the playing surface, described as a ‘plug and play’ pitch laid just a week prior, appeared disjointed in photographs. Travelling ground staff from the Football Association have been liaising with the venue to address these concerns. Tuchel admitted to initial anxiety after viewing images of the turf but stated he has been assured the surface will be acceptable. He emphasised that any potential issues will be managed on the ground rather than influencing his tactical decisions.

To manage player workload ahead of the World Cup, Tuchel confirmed plans to field two separate teams for 45-minute halves during the New Zealand fixture. This approach aims to expose all squad members to an equal amount of playing time, allowing the coaching staff to assess fitness levels under the humid Florida conditions. The structure is designed to maintain consistent training loads over the subsequent three days while providing necessary rest and rotation.

Captain Harry Kane is reported to be in top physical condition, with Tuchel noting the striker’s high intensity during recent defensive training sessions. Despite the heat, the England manager expressed no concern regarding Kane’s readiness, citing his influential role in Bayern Munich’s recent campaign, which included three goals in the cup final. Tuchel indicated that while the team would ideally manage Kane’s minutes, his status as the primary goalscorer and leader means he will likely remain on the pitch if the match remains competitive.

The squad has seen several adjustments, with goalkeeper Dean Henderson joining following Crystal Palace’s Conference League victory. Additionally, Premier League players Josh King, Rio Ngumoha, Ethan Nwaneri, Alex Scott, and Jason Steele have trained with the group to boost numbers. Key Arsenal players, including Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice, were absent from Friday’s session due to their involvement in the Champions League final. Tuchel revealed he has approximately 14 to 15 players in mind to start the opening World Cup game against Croatia, using the friendlies to finalise the XI.

England will subsequently move to their tournament training base in Kansas City, Missouri, before opening their Group L campaign against Croatia in Dallas on 17 June. The squad faces Ghana on 23 June in Massachusetts and Panama on 27 June in New Jersey. Tuchel also confirmed that players are permitted to finalise transfer deals, such as Elliot Anderson’s potential move to Manchester City, provided these activities do not significantly disrupt preparations.
