US President Donald Trump has pledged a US$5,000 “dividend” for every American adult if Republicans retain control of the House of Representatives and Senate in November’s midterm elections.
Trump made the promise at a Republican convention in Dallas, linking the proposed payment to continued Republican control of both congressional chambers. The pledge, reported by Al Jazeera, has not been approved and would require congressional action.
The proposal’s scope is already uncertain. Vice-President JD Vance offered a narrower interpretation, describing a dividend for American workers connected to the benefits of tariff policy rather than a payment to every adult.
Senator Bernie Moreno, a Trump ally, said he would introduce legislation to codify the proposal. No funding mechanism, legislative detail or timetable for payments has been provided.
Estimates cited in the reporting put the potential cost above US$1 trillion. Critics and observers have raised questions about the proposal’s legal status, its effect on the budget deficit and the possibility that a large cash injection could contribute to inflation.
The pledge has also drawn scepticism from some Trump supporters, including concerns that it is inconsistent with Republican opposition to government handouts. Whether the proposal covers all adults, American workers or another group remains unresolved.
