Toure makes history as first African coach to reach Champions League group stage

Yaya Toure has etched his name into European football history by becoming the first African coach to lead a team into the main round of the UEFA Champions League. The 43-year-old former midfielder achieved the milestone with Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava, a club he joined as head coach in June.

The historic qualification was secured on Wednesday following a 3-2 aggregate victory over Slovenian side NK Celje in the qualifying playoffs. Toure’s tenure has been marked by immediate tactical impact, with the club recording four league wins under his management since his arrival.

The path to the group stage involved a steady progression through the qualifying rounds. Slovan Bratislava opened their campaign in July with a 2-0 win over Georgian side Saburtalo, followed by a 1-1 draw in the return leg. They subsequently defeated Sweden’s Mjallby in both legs of the second qualifying round to advance to the playoffs.

Toure’s appointment represents a significant shift in the coaching landscape of European club football. Having retired from an 18-year professional career in 2019, he had previously served as an assistant manager at various European clubs and as assistant coach for the Saudi Arabian national team in 2023.

His managerial debut at the highest level coincided with a display of enduring fan support. During the decisive match, supporters performed the “Yaya Toure” chant, a tribute popularised during his time as a key figure at Manchester City in the 2010s.

The former Barcelona and Manchester City star is widely regarded as one of the greatest African footballers of all time. He is the joint most decorated player from the continent, having won four African Footballer of the Year awards between 2011 and 2014, and captained Ivory Coast to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2015.

Slovan Bratislava will now await the group phase draw, which is scheduled to take place in Madrid late on Thursday.
