Tottenham lock in Marmoush transfer with £50 million obligation
The Egyptian forward joins on a season-long loan with a guaranteed buy clause, marking a significant financial commitment for a club seeking to stabilise its squad after two consecutive 17th-place finishes.
Tottenham Hotspur have secured the services of Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush from Manchester City on a season-long loan, a move that includes an obligation to make the transfer permanent at the end of the campaign. According to British media, the deal is structured around a guaranteed fee of £50 million ($68 million), supplemented by £10 million in performance-related add-ons.
The 27-year-old’s arrival represents a pivotal moment for the club, which has been engaged in a substantial rebuilding exercise following two difficult seasons in which it finished 17th in the Premier League. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who took charge in March and guided the team to safety, has prioritised adding attacking depth to a squad that has already seen significant investment.
Marmoush’s trajectory at Manchester City has been inconsistent. While he scored seven goals in his first half-season at the Etihad Stadium, he struggled to secure consistent playing time behind established figures such as Erling Haaland in the subsequent campaign, netting only three goals in 21 Premier League appearances. At Tottenham, the versatile forward, who can operate centrally or from the left wing, is expected to receive more regular opportunities.
The signing is part of a broader recruitment drive that has seen Tottenham add midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, as well as defender Jan Paul van Hecke, for a combined fee of £237 million ($322 million). The club has also moved to sign Brazilian winger Savio from Manchester City in a separate deal reportedly worth approximately £75 million ($102 million) plus £10 million in add-ons.
Marmoush expressed enthusiasm for the project in a statement released on Thursday, citing his conversations with De Zerbi as a key factor in his decision. “Tottenham Hotspur is one of the biggest clubs in England, if not the world, and the project was very attractive to me,” he said.
The new signing arrives as Tottenham looks to recover from a 3-0 defeat at Brentford in their Premier League opener. The club is scheduled to host Newcastle United on Saturday, with Marmoush’s potential inclusion offering a tactical boost to a side that has previously lacked attacking quality.
