Total Solar Eclipse Casts Shadow Over Rural Spain
The Moon’s shadow crossed north-central Spain last week, offering viewers over 1.5 minutes of totality against a backdrop of ancient architecture and drought-swept plains.

A total solar eclipse was observed in Duratón, Spain, located approximately 100 kilometres north of Madrid, as the Moon’s shadow raced across the region. The event provided viewers with just over 1.5 minutes of totality, during which witnesses reported the Sun’s outer atmosphere appearing as a white halo before the star resumed its normal appearance.
The viewing conditions in the area were influenced by an ongoing drought that has turned Spain’s fields and forests into a tinderbox, yet these dry conditions proved ideal for observing the celestial event. Approximately 100 local residents, tourists, and photographers gathered at a 12th or 13th-century Romanesque church in Duratón to witness the phenomenon.
The gathering took place in a historically significant setting, with the church situated next to a Visigothic cemetery featuring anthropomorphic rock-cut tombs. Nearby, on a hill approximately 1,000 feet away, lie the ruins of the Roman city of Confloenta, which is currently undergoing archaeological study.
Attendees arrived with cameras, telescopes, and music, creating a scene that blended ancient history with modern astronomy. The event marked the third eclipse for one attendee, an eclipse neophyte who had previously observed total solar eclipses in the United States in 2017 and 2024.
The next total solar eclipse visible in the continental United States is not expected until 2044. Standard advice for such events includes having backup plans for cloud cover, managing crowd expectations, and using safe eclipse-viewing glasses.
