Toone and Kelly left out of England’s World Cup qualifying squad
Leah Williamson returns and Chelsea midfielder Lexi Potter earns her first senior call-up for the Greece play-off tie.
Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly have been omitted from England’s 23-player squad for the Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off against Greece, according to BBC Sport. The report says Toone misses out after an inconsistent start to the season; it gives no reason for Kelly’s omission.
Captain Leah Williamson returns after missing England’s June matches, while Chelsea midfielder Lexi Potter has received her first senior call-up. Potter has started three of Chelsea’s opening four matches, the report says.
Uncapped midfielder Erica Meg Parkinson, London City Lionesses forward Freya Godfrey and Liverpool defender Grace Fisk are also named. Niamh Charles is included after returning from injury as a substitute for Manchester City.
England are scheduled to play Greece in Crete on 9 October and in Leicester on 13 October. Winning the tie would send England into the play-off second round, where they could compete for a place at next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
