Titans coach Saleh insists Ward’s execution issues are procedural, not capability-based

Tennessee Titans head coach Robert Saleh has reaffirmed his institutional confidence in quarterback Cam Ward following the team’s preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Despite Ward completing only five of 12 passes for 57 yards and one touchdown, Saleh characterised the performance as a procedural adjustment rather than a reflection of capability, emphasising that the coaching staff’s belief in the quarterback remains undimmed.
During a videoconference with reporters on Friday, Saleh noted that Ward’s mechanics appeared "a little more sped up" compared to the controlled environment of training camp. The head coach attributed this acceleration to the novelty of facing an opposing defence for the first time, suggesting that Ward may have reverted to habits formed during his rookie year when afforded less time to process defensive alignments.
Statistically, Ward’s performance was split across two distinct phases. He completed two of four passes for 34 yards while leading a touchdown drive on the team’s first possession. However, his efficiency dropped over his final two series, where he completed three of eight passes for 23 yards. Saleh interpreted this variance as a symptom of the increased pressure from live opposition rather than a deficit in skill or preparation.
The coaching staff’s assessment relies heavily on internal metrics from training camp, where Saleh stated Ward executed every play flawlessly. The strategy moving forward is to replicate these conditions through repetition. Saleh described the solution as "time on task," arguing that continued practice reps are essential to build the trust and comfort required for Ward to thrive in the offence during his second season.
"We’re gonna continue to harp on all the technique, the fundamentals," Saleh said, outlining a focus on getting feet down, maintaining technique, and delivering the football with precision. He stressed that the coaching staff will continue to run drills at a high level to reinforce these fundamentals, viewing the upcoming schedule as an opportunity to solidify execution.
Saleh dismissed any notion that the Thursday night performance raised doubts about Ward’s potential. "There’s no doubt Cam is capable, we’ve just got to go execute," he stated, framing the challenge as one of consistency rather than talent. The Titans are scheduled to face the Seattle Seahawks in their next preseason fixture, providing another opportunity to refine the offence before the regular season.
