Donnarumma rejects Manchester City transition narrative as trophy ambitions remain intact
The goalkeeper says City’s perfect start has created confidence despite major summer changes, while warning there is still work to do.
Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has rejected the idea that the club is entering a transition season, telling Sky Sports the team’s objective remains to compete for every major trophy.
City have won their opening four matches under Enzo Maresca, according to the report, although Donnarumma acknowledged the side has not been entirely convincing and still has plenty to learn.
The club lost several established figures during the summer, including Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Rodri. In response, Donnarumma said a new leadership group comprising himself, Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland and Marc Guehi was helping maintain standards.
He also said new arrivals were adapting well, with established players supporting them as they settled into a new club, organisation and city. Donnarumma cited City’s Manchester Derby victory as evidence of the squad’s resilience after difficult moments.
City are targeting the Premier League, Champions League and both domestic cups. Donnarumma identified Arsenal as a major rival but said it was too early, after four matches, to predict whether the sides would again contest the title.
