Tim Curry, the British actor behind Dr Frank-N-Furter, dies at 80

British actor Tim Curry, widely recognised for his portrayal of Dr Frank-N-Furter in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has died at the age of 80. According to a statement released by his longtime manager, Marcia Hurwitz, Curry died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday. The specific cause of death was not disclosed at the time of the announcement.
Curry’s career spanned film, television, and the stage, where he earned three Tony Award nominations. His stage credits included performances in Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Monty Python’s Spamalot. While he was a frequent presence in film, often cast in villainous roles, critics noted that his most celebrated work occurred on the Broadway stage.
His most iconic performance came in the 1975 film adaptation of The Rocky Horror Show, where he played the cross-dressing scientist Frank-N-Furter. Curry had previously taken the role to Broadway after the show premiered in London in 1973. In a 1975 television interview, he acknowledged the risk of being typecast by the part, stating that he believed a role was not worth doing unless one took a risk.
Beyond his musical theatre fame, Curry appeared in several notable films, including the 1990 miniseries It, where he played the child-killing monster, and the 1993 adventure film The Three Musketeers. In the latter, he portrayed Cardinal Richelieu alongside Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, and Chris O’Donnell. Sutherland released a statement on Wednesday expressing his personal grief, describing Curry as someone he loved working with.
Curry’s later years were marked by significant health challenges. He withdrew from a British stage production in 2011 due to ill health and suffered a debilitating stroke in 2013, which led to him using a wheelchair and reducing his workload. Despite these setbacks, he returned to the screen in 2024 for the horror film Stream.
Born in Grappenhall, Cheshire, Curry studied drama at Birmingham University. He was also a composer and singer who performed with his own rock band. The actor lived in Los Angeles and never married or had children.
