Tigers remove Greene from lineup after pitch contact
Detroit Tigers pulled Riley Greene from Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians after he was hit by a fastball in the second inning, substituting Ben Malgeri for the injured player.
The Detroit Tigers removed left fielder Riley Greene from the series-opener against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, 11 August, after he was struck by a pitch in the second inning. Greene was hit in the lower right leg by a 3-2 fastball from Guardians starter Tanner Bibee during his first and only at-bat of the game.
Although the initial contact appeared severe, slow-motion replay indicated the pitch may have partially struck the leg guard Greene was wearing. Greene initially waved off manager A.J. Hinch and proceeded to first base to applause from the crowd. He continued to run the bases and scored on an RBI double by first baseman Spencer Torkelson, giving the Tigers the game’s first run.
Despite sprinting around the bases seemingly without issue, Greene remained in the third-base dugout for the top of the third inning. Ben Malgeri replaced him in left field for the start of the third inning. The Tigers’ lead was subsequently erased when Cleveland evened the game at 1-1 with a solo home run by Chase DeLauter off Tigers starter Drew Anderson.
Greene has been a consistent presence for Detroit this season, appearing in 116 of the team’s 118 games in either left field or as a designated hitter. The All-Star corner outfielder is currently hitting .273 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs for the season.
