Tigers overturn deficit to defeat Royals in Comerica Park comeback
Detroit overcomes a 2-0 deficit with a seventh-inning home run from James Outman and a clutch RBI single from Dillon Dingler to secure a 4-3 victory over Kansas City.
The Detroit Tigers secured a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park on Thursday night, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to extend their recent winning streak. The win improves Detroit’s record to 49-54, with the team posting a 12-5 record in July and a 27-16 mark since June 1.
The turning point arrived in the seventh inning when James Outman, who was hitting .155 entering the game, drove a 2-2 fastball into the shrubs in right field for a three-run home run. Outman, a former Tiger who returned to Detroit, hit his fourth home run since joining the club, giving the Tigers a temporary 3-2 lead.
Dillon Dingler had previously broken the tie in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI single into the left-field corner. The hit marked his 35th two-out RBI and his team-high 66th run batted in for the season.
Kansas City starter Randy Dobnak, a former Tiger who pitched for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens in 2023, stifled Detroit’s offense for five innings. He allowed four hits and kept the Tigers off the scoreboard until the sixth inning, when Isaac Collins hit a home run. Tigers starter Troy Melton struggled, walking four batters and allowing six runs, three of them earned, over five innings.
The Royals briefly reclaimed the lead in the eighth when Josh Rojas scored on a wild pitch following a single by Michael Massey. However, Kyle Finnegan ended the threat in the ninth inning by inducing a 4-6-3 double play after being summoned by manager AJ Hinch. Finnegan replaced Drew Sommers, who had allowed a walk and a single. The game drew an attendance of 35,548.
