Tiafoe rallies from two sets down to reach US Open semi-finals
Frances Tiafoe defeated Alex Michelsen in five sets after trailing by two sets and a break, securing his third US Open semi-final in five years.
Frances Tiafoe has reached his third US Open semi-final after recovering from two sets and a break down to defeat fellow American Alex Michelsen 5–7, 3–6, 7–5, 6–3, 7–6 on Tuesday night.
The match was decided by a 10-point tie-break, which Tiafoe won 10–6. He had also fallen a break behind in the fifth set before forcing the contest level and holding serve through the closing stages.
Michelsen entered the quarter-final as the only man in the tournament yet to drop a set. The 22-year-old was seeking his first Grand Slam semi-final but is now 0–3 in five-set matches, according to CBS Sports.
Tiafoe’s semi-final opponent will be the winner of the quarter-final between second seed Carlos Alcaraz and eighth seed Ben Shelton.
The result marks Tiafoe’s third US Open semi-final in five years. He has not previously reached a Grand Slam final.
