Vikings complete historic comeback to defeat Packers 39–22
Minnesota overturned a 12-point deficit with 29 unanswered points, while Green Bay’s late turnovers turned a close contest into a 17-point defeat.
The Minnesota Vikings have opened the NFL season with a 39–22 victory over the Green Bay Packers after overturning a 12-point deficit late in the third quarter.
Green Bay led 22–10 before Carson Wentz’s 16-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson with 2:08 remaining in the third quarter. Minnesota then scored 29 unanswered points, including 22 in the fourth quarter.
According to OptaStats, the Vikings reportedly became the first NFL team recorded to trail by at least 12 points with fewer than 20 minutes remaining and win by at least 17 points.
Green Bay’s final two turnovers directly produced 14 points for Minnesota. Jordan Love lost a fumble recovered at the 1-yard line, then threw an interception that gave the Vikings possession at the Packers’ 14.
The turnovers changed a 25–22 game into a 39–22 result. Green Bay also failed on fourth down twice, including a fourth-and-1 sneak.
Minnesota scored 39 points despite gaining 239 total yards and averaging 3.9 yards per play. The collapse echoed the Packers’ fourth-quarter defeat in the previous NFC Wild Card Round, when they were outscored 25–6.
