Thunder predicted to trade Chet Holmgren for No. 3 pick, NBA champion in Draft-Day blockbuster
Speculation mounts over Chet Holmgren’s future as media models suggest blockbuster deal with Memphis

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s season concluded on Saturday night after a Game 7 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs, immediately shifting focus to the franchise’s structural and financial outlook. In the wake of the elimination, media projections have emerged suggesting the Thunder may initiate a significant roster overhaul, potentially trading star centre Chet Holmgren to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The proposed transaction, outlined in a social media projection by user Sidery, positions the Thunder as the acquiring party for the No. 3 overall draft pick, identified in the model as Cam Boozer, alongside veterans Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Santi Aldama. In return, Oklahoma City would send Holmgren, the 12th and 17th overall picks, and future first-round selections to Memphis.

The speculation appears driven by the Thunder’s need to manage their financial situation and create salary cap flexibility for the upcoming offseason. While the team enters the draft with two first-round picks, the projected move would allow the franchise to open up cap space, potentially enabling them to retain other key pieces within the organisation while acquiring new assets.

Head coach Mark Daigneault emphasised the team’s reliance on Holmgren during end-of-season meetings, noting the correlation between the centre’s health and the team’s standing. “Every minute Chet Holmgren’s been on the team, we’ve been the number one seed in the Western Conference,” Daigneault said. “And it wasn’t the case before Chet was healthy.”

Holmgren, meanwhile, acknowledged a dip in his usual aggression during the series against San Antonio. He cited being “closed out heavily” and being “out of rhythm” as factors limiting his opportunities, stating he would need to review the tape to understand the specifics of his performance.

For the Memphis Grizzlies, who are described as being in a rebuild phase, receiving two first-round picks in the proposed deal would represent a significant asset accumulation. The Thunder would also benefit from adding veteran depth through Caldwell-Pope and Aldama, alongside the developmental potential of Boozer.

The scenario remains a projection rather than a confirmed agreement, with the identity of the player selected at No. 3 subject to change based on actual draft outcomes. However, the framework highlights the complex decision-making process facing Thunder management as they weigh immediate competitiveness against long-term financial and roster stability.
